Description

From my field experience studying tropical crops, the cashew tree stands out as an evergreen, large species. It is scientifically known as Anacardium occidentale. It grows tall up to 14 metres (feet). The trunk is short and irregularly shaped. The leaves are spirally arranged. They are leathery and textured. Their shape ranges from elliptic to obovate. They are measured in centimetres and inches. The leaves are long, broad, and have smooth margins. The flowers appear in a panicle or corymb. They are pale green and turn reddish. The petals are slender and acute.

Etymology

In linguistic research I’ve done alongside botanists, the English name traces back to Portuguese Caju and acaju. These terms come from the Tupi word acajú. It refers to a nut that produces itself. The scientific naming draws from Greek roots. The prefix ana means upward. The word cardia means heart. These are combined with the Neo-Latin suffix ium. This reflects shape, fruit, stem, or seed. The name is historically linked to Semecarpus anacardium. This was the marking nut studied by Linnaeus. It belongs to the same family. The epithet occidentale points to the Western, Occidental, world.

Distribution and habitat

From a geographic standpoint, the species is native to tropical South America. It was later distributed across the world in the 1500s. This spread was driven by Portuguese explorers and colonists. Brazil began exporting cashew nuts in the 1550s. The crop moved through Goa. It passed into Estado, Índia, Portuguesa. It expanded across India, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Cultivation

In practice, the tree is cultivated across the tropics. This range lies between 25°N and 25°S. It thrives in hot lowland regions. These areas have a dry season. Crops like mango and tamarind also thrive here. Cultivation evolved from traditional tall trees. These required long planting periods before production. The delay affected economic harvests. Today, dwarf breeds are preferred. They rely on modern grafting. Improved management and technologies increase yields. Output is measured per hectare. These systems dominate commercial orchards.

Industry data from 2023 shows global production levels clearly. Cashew nuts processed as kernel reached million tonnes. Ivory Coast and India dominate output. Together, they hold a combined percentage of the world total.

Toxicity

Clinically and industrially, toxicity is significant. Allergic reactions to cashews occur frequently. Other tree nuts and peanuts show similar responses. These reactions affect children and adults. It protects termite-prone timber. Chemically, it contains anacardic acids. Other components include cardol, cardanol, and phenols. These enable polymerization. The result is resins and coatings. It is used in frictional materials. It may act as allergens. It forms composite monomer structures. Applications include epoxy, polyols, and polyurethane.

Animal feed

On farms, discarded nuts are reused. Residues remain after oil extraction. These include kernels. They are fed to livestock. Even leaves are used as animal feed.

Beyond food, the bark produces dye. Timber supports boat-making. It is used for house-boards. It also produces charcoal. The plant aids preservative treatments. It supports waterproofing. Inside is a kidney-shaped seed. The shell contains a toxic substance. This substance is urushiol. This explains why only shelled products reach the market.
