FSC 100% refers to the virgin fiber being all virgin and FSC-certified, FSC Recycled refers to the virgin fiber being all recycled and FSC Mix is a combination of FSC-certified virgin fiber and recycled fiber or controlled wood. FSC only says FSC, leaving the question unanswered, thus inquiring your custom kraft box provider what of the three labels the board is adorned with.
What sentence would you like to print on the box? Only Recycled justifies a statement that the box is recycled fiber, since Mix does not have a share of any recycled fiber, and only 100% states that all fibers are virgin, certified forests. Check with your supplier how the label and the claim may be used on your own packaging before artwork goes to print.
What size board is used in each box?
Request in writing the weight per custom kraft boxes of the board recycled at each size. Compare the levers then to your own numbers. A box is 60 percent virgin fiber today. An increase in recycled content to 50 percent of the virgin reduces virgin fiber by approximately a 6th. Reducing the box to 9 x 7 x 3 inches (instead of 10 x 8 x 4 inches) decreases the surface area of the box by 27 percent, and the total fiber by approximately the same percentage. In this case the smaller box beats the recycled swap, and both are reducing virgin fiber usage by a percentage of approximately 39.
What is the lightest board that passes?
Adjust the size of the wall and the custom kraft box supplier. Boards of the same crush rating may vary in weight, so request the edge crush test (ECT) rating to be shown along with the weight, then drop-test it with your product. The balloon board that passes is the lightest.
When the product no longer makes it through the journey. An oversized box may flatten corners or drop, and a second shipment will be twice the amount of packaging you were intending to save. Test the smaller size on the actual product, the actual insert, and the coarsest route you ship to before transferring a complete line to it.
In what way do you report the result?
